Big Sister Academy is open for applications

The Big Sister Academy is paving the future for entrepreneurship and gender equality

Girls of Impact is thrilled to announce the first one of a kind program for young women in Australia to accelerate gender equality and create impactful careers that change the world .

The Big Sister Academy is a unique 9-month scholarship program that combines future-proofing skill building like resilience, entrepreneurship, change management and developing growth mindsets while also putting these skills to use through aligned industry learning, practical hands-on work experience and problem solving hackathons through the sponsorship of a tier-one global company committed to gender equality. Across a jam-packed program of interactive learning, technology immersion and leadership cultivation, The Big Sister Academy will upskill and ignite the thinking of girls to navigate their lives and future careers.

Exposure to industry role models and experts in structured mentorship program is the hallmark of this program as well as the opportunity to network with trailblazing women and changemakers.

Kate Bushell, Founder and CEO of Girls of Impact says: “It’s important young women are put in front of diverse mentors and role models early on due to the gender bias and stereotypes that still exist in our society. Research shows 60% of girls say they find it challenging to find female role models but need to be connected with female leaders of today and tomorrow. This has a significant impact on self confidence, the career trajectory for young women and building future-proof skills, so the Big Sister Academy aims to bridge that gap and give girls a head start in their careers, especially in non-traditional ones as well as teach them how to become future leaders.”

The Big Sister Academy is a free program thanks to corporate sponsorship and community partners. This round of scholarships kick starts in March 2022 and is made possible through the generous support of Schneider Electric, a French multinational company with the purpose to empower all to make the most of our energy and resources, bridging progress, and sustainability for all.

The Big Sister Academy is open to all girls in secondary school from grades 10 to 12. Girls who are First Nations, culturally diverse across different abilities are encouraged to apply.

“The future of work is ever evolving, we need to show all young women they need to be taking their places in the boardrooms and breaking the glass ceilings that still exist.” Ms Kate Bushell adds.

“Many tertiary education providers equip students with foundational and theoretical knowledge, but in this new world, it’s all about work experience and critical thinking skills which is what employers are looking for. The Big Sister Academy offers the best of both worlds so that girls and young women can lead, succeed and thrive in today’s workplaces and beyond and pave the way to take Australia forward.”

The Academy is aligned to the Australian Curriculum General Capabilities learning areas.

To celebrate the launch of Big Sister Academy in collaboration with Schneider Electric, there is a powerful and inspiring panel session of changemakers to talk about the power of mentorship as well as a sneak peek into the Big Sister Academy on Wednesday 8 December 2021 at 6pm AEDT. This not to be missed event is open to all parents, carers, students and teachers. You can register for the  free event here on Humanitix.
